Research fields

  • Nuclear Fusion Technology

    The groups has been active in research activities on nuclear fusion systems since more than 20 years. The focus of the studies, starting from the thermal-fluid-dynamics of superconducting magnets, has progressively expanded including the main component constituting the fusion reactor, in a multiphysics framework. More recently, an additional effort in the risk assessment of this concepts has been started with promising results.

  • Nuclear Fission Technology

    The research activity on fission nuclear systems is mainly focused on the analysis of innovative reactors, with a specific focus on Gen-IV designs.

    The interest has been focused in the past 15-20 years on the development of methods and models for the neutronic analysis of such systems, leading to various key publications in the field of reactory physics and transport theory. 

    In the last years, a more comprehensive research effort has been launched for the development of tools for the multiphysics analysis of fast reactors, as well as the application of risk analysis methods to innovative reactor designs, such as the molten salt reactors.

  • Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety (RAMS)

    The NEMO staff has expertise in the field of Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety (RAMS), developed at first in the nuclear field and then widely applied in many other field of process engineering, such as Oil&Gas.

    The interest in the development of innovative nuclear systems has motivated the current research activity for the application of risk analysis methods and tools to future nuclear reactors, such as Molten Salt Reactors and fusion reactors.

    The group has developed a wide experience in structural problems with/without thermal coupling, both in the field of nuclear fusion and several other cutting-edge technologies.

  • Concentrated Solar Power (CSP)

    Since 2013, the NEMO Group is also active in the modelling of CSP systems. The research activities in this field has been mainly devoted to the numerical modeling of the solar receiver.
