Nuclear fusion
The roadmap towards the deployment of next generation nuclear systems includes very detailed safety assessment and risk analysis; therefore, safety studies are performed in the frame of the conceptual design studies for the European Demonstration Fusion Power Plant (DEMO) to assess the safety and environmental impact of different design options. Due to the very conceptual design phase of the reactor, the selected analytical tool is the Functional Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FFMEA), as it is a suitable methodology to define possible accident initiators when insufficient design detail is available to perform more specific evaluation at the component level. This approach allows to identify functional deviations able to compromise system safety, to list Postulated Initiating Events (PIEs) as the most representative events in terms of challenging conditions for the plant safety and to recognize critical components, lack of information and/or criticalities of the design and necessity of supplementary barriers and/or auxiliary safety systems.
