CFD analyses of fusion reactor components

The NEMO group is involved on the application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for fusion reactors, including cooling-related problems with high heat flux components, cooling of in-vessel components and deterministic analyses of accidental transients. Analysis involving steady-state thermal-hydraulic CFD simulations are applied for the cooling improvement of the cavity that will be installed in the European 170 GHz, 1MW Gyrotron developed for ITER and for the analysis of the coolant mass flow rates distribution in the the Back Supporting Structure (BSS) of the DEMO Helium-Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) and Helium-Cooled Lithium-Lead (HCLL) breeding blanket concept. In addition, transient CFD simulations are applied to analyze the temperature transient in the in-vessel components during maintenance and the pressure evolution following an in-vessel Loss-Of-Coolant Accident.
